The fleur-de-lis quarter is marked BELLEAU WOOD, where the battalion fought in France; the French government awarded it the Croix de Guerre and the fourragère, a braided cord the 5th Marines still wear. The VIETNAM quarter stands for 1966 to 1971, when the battalion fought around Chu Lai, Da Nang, Que Son and An Hoa.
Activated: 1 June 1917.
Key battles: Belleau Wood (World War I); the Pusan Perimeter, Inchon, Seoul and the Chosin Reservoir (Korea); Operation Swift (Vietnam, 1967).
